If you’re setting up your Google Business Profile for the first time, it’s worth doing right from day one — fixing a rushed setup later is harder than getting the basics correct now. This guide walks through every step, from creating the listing to what to check once it’s verified.

1. Search Before You Create a New Listing

Before creating anything, search your business name and address on Google Maps. Sometimes a listing already exists — created automatically from an old directory or a previous owner — and claiming that existing listing is faster than creating a duplicate, which Google can flag or merge later.

2. Create Your Profile at google.com/business

Sign in with a Google account (ideally one you’ll keep long-term, not a personal one you might lose access to), go to google.com/business, and enter your exact business name — use your real, registered trading name, not a keyword-stuffed variation like “Sharma Electronics Best Repair Shop.” Google penalizes keyword stuffing in business names and it can get a listing suspended.

3. Choose Your Category Carefully

Pick the single most specific primary category available for what you actually do, then add 2-3 accurate secondary categories. This single decision affects which searches you’re even eligible to appear for — get it too broad and you compete in a much harder pool than necessary.

4. Set Your Exact Location or Service Area

If customers visit you, drop the map pin on your exact entrance, not just the general block. If you serve customers at their location instead (electricians, event planners, home services), set a service area listing every locality you genuinely cover instead of a physical storefront address.

5. Add Complete Contact Details and Hours

Fill in your phone number, website, and accurate opening hours, including special hours for festivals and holidays. An incomplete profile looks less trustworthy to both Google and customers scanning search results quickly.

6. Verify Your Profile

Complete verification through whichever method Google offers — phone, email, or postcard. Your listing is largely invisible in local search until this step is done, so don’t skip ahead to photos and posts before verifying.

7. Add Photos, Services, and Your First Posts

Upload real photos of your storefront, products, and team. List every specific service or product under the Services/Products section using the words a customer would actually search. Then use the Posts feature to share your first update or offer.

What to Do in the First 30 Days

Setup is just the starting point — what happens in the weeks after determines whether the listing actually performs. Once your profile is live, work through these in order:

If your profile still isn’t appearing in searches after this, our guide on why Google Business Profiles don’t show up in local search covers every common cause and fix.

Common First-Time Mistakes to Avoid

  • Stuffing keywords into the business name
  • Choosing a vague primary category to “cover everything”
  • Leaving the profile untouched after verification instead of adding photos and posts regularly
  • Using a personal Gmail account that only one employee has access to
  • Listing service areas far beyond where the business actually operates
