Ask any shop owner in India and you’ll hear the same story: a customer walks in and says “I searched for you on Google but couldn’t find you.” Meanwhile, the shop two streets over — sometimes with a worse product — shows up first every time, pin dropped right in the middle of the map.
If this sounds familiar, the good news is that “not showing on Google Maps” almost always comes down to one of a small number of causes, and every one of them is fixable without spending a rupee on ads.
1. Your Google Business Profile was never created or verified
This is the most common cause by far. Many shop owners assume having a website is the same as being on Google Maps — it isn’t. Google Maps only shows businesses that have a Google Business Profile, and that profile has to be verified before it’s eligible to appear at all.
Fix: Search your business name on Google. If nothing comes up under “Places,” go to google.com/business, create a listing, and complete verification (usually by an OTP call, SMS, or a postcard to your shop address).
2. Your shop’s map pin is in the wrong spot
Even a verified listing can go missing from local searches if the pin is placed on the wrong street, building, or even the wrong side of the road. Google’s local ranking depends heavily on exact location accuracy — a pin that’s off by even 100 metres can push you out of the “near me” results customers actually see.
Fix: Open your Business Profile, go to the map location setting, and drag the pin to your exact entrance. Walk outside your shop and check it against what a customer standing there would see on Google Maps.
3. Your category doesn’t match what customers search for
If your shop sells sarees but is listed under the generic category “Store,” Google won’t reliably show you for “saree shop near me” — because as far as Google’s system is concerned, you never told it you sell sarees.
Fix: In your profile, set the most specific primary category available (e.g. “Saree Store” not “Clothing Store,” “Mobile Repair Shop” not “Electronics Store”), then add 2–3 accurate secondary categories.
4. You have very few (or no) reviews
Google leans heavily on review count and recency to decide which businesses to surface first in “near me” searches. A shop with zero or very old reviews looks less trustworthy to the algorithm than a competitor with a steady flow of recent ones — even if your shop is actually better.
Fix: After every sale, ask the customer directly for a Google review. Sending a WhatsApp message with your direct review link right after the purchase, while the experience is fresh, works far better than asking later.
5. Your profile looks inactive
An old photo, no updates, and outdated hours signal to Google that a business might not be reliably open — which quietly hurts your local visibility even if you’re open every day.
Fix: Add a few real photos every month (storefront, products, shop interior), and use the “Add Update” feature to post festival hours, offers, or new stock every couple of weeks.
6. Your business details don’t match across the internet
If your shop is “Krishna General Store” on Google but “Krishna Store” on Justdial and “Krishna General Stores” on Facebook, Google has to work harder to confirm it’s really the same business — and that uncertainty can quietly suppress your ranking.
This covers the fixes most common for retail shops. For the complete, in-depth breakdown covering every scenario, see our full guide on why Google Business Profiles don’t show up in local search.
Fix: Search your shop name and phone number, and update every directory listing (Justdial, Sulekha, IndiaMART, Facebook) so the name, address, and phone number match exactly, word for word.
The fastest way to know exactly what’s wrong with your shop’s listing
In our experience, it’s rarely all six of these at once — usually one or two specific gaps are quietly keeping a shop invisible, and fixing just those brings it back into local search within a few weeks.
